The history of basketball
James Naismith, a teacher in Massachusetts is credited with inventing the game of basketball. The first basketball match was played in 1892. Ever since then it has only gone upwards for the sport. It became an Olympic sport in 1936 and the current National Basketball Association was formed after the 1948-49 season with the merger to two former associations.

The National Basketball Association (NBA)
The 30 team association is currently in its 69th year of operations. The first NBA season was played in 1946-47. Boston Celtics have won the most championships in the association’s history, i.e. 17. However, the most valuable franchise in the league right now is New York Knicks with an estimated value of $3.3 billion. Lebron James is currently the highest paid player in NBA, taking home a whopping $31 million in 2017.

The basketball industry
The first basketballs were introduced during the 1950s. Before that players used soccer balls with dust on their hands to provide better grip. The growth of the sport has benefitted the manufacturing industry with hundreds of thousands of balls being sold every year. It’s not just balls, the raw material that goes into making them plus other related equipment also generate sales. Player jerseys, shorts and shoes are some of the industries that have jumped in and associated themselves with the basketball industry. The major brands involved in manufacturing basketballs include Spalding, Wilson, Air Jordan, Nike and Adidas among others.

Basketball records
Michael Jordan has scored the most points in a playoff, i.e. 5987, a record that stands till today. Kareem Abdul Jabbar holds the record for most point scored in an NBA career with 38,387. People keeping pushing the boundaries of what’s possible and break records in categories denominated by Guinness World Records, for example, the longest basketball shot ever made is a 112 ft. 6 in. held by Elan Buller of USA. The highest recorded basketball shot ever was made by Derek Herron from the top of Mauvoisin Dam in Switzerland at a height of about 593 ft.
