Our last article identified two main factors to consider when purchasing playground equipment: age and location.  Today, we will go a step further and look at the importance of proper installation and maintenance.

While there are no laws governing playgrounds, there are two agencies that have published guidelines pertaining to playground installation and maintenance: the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM).  The CPSC issued a Handbook for Public Playground Safety, while the ASTM has specific set of standards labeled “Standard Consumer Safety Performance Specification for Playground Equipment for Public Use.”

Installation

Once you’ve selected your equipment, it is crucial to work with a company that can properly install your playground.  Equipment that is improperly installed puts children at risk for injury and your company at risk for a lawsuit.  The CPSC and ASTM each details playground installation guidelines that all reputable manufacturers and installers adhere to.

Maintenance

The ASTM and CPSC also provide guidelines for maintaining playground equipment.  Regardless of how frequently your playground is used, routine maintenance and inspection is absolutely necessary.  While you should inspect the equipment for problems each time it is used, we highly recommend an annual inspection by one of our licensed inspectors.  Our team is trained to identify areas in need of repair before they become a problem.  Regular maintenance of your equipment ensures that your playground will can be enjoyed without interruptions or injuries.
