Kids’ Favorite Sports

There’s no question that a high percentage of kids love sports. While not every kid will choose a team sport to focus his or her energy and attention on, a lot do. Organized, team sports offer a lot more than exercise. Kids who participate in team sports also develop important friendships, camaraderie, grit, drive, perseverance, work ethic, and a natural ability to be comfortable in their own skin.
So which sports are the most popular for the younger set?
Basketball Comes in First
Girls and boys love basketball, and according to ESPN, more than 450,000 girls and 550,000 boys across the country are on school-sponsored teams. Kids love that when they’re younger they have plenty of opportunity to build skills and then, as they get older, to put those skills to use in competition.
Next Up is Baseball / Softball / Tee Ball
Again, girls and boys are in agreement about baseball and associated sports. Both genders love a good game of baseball, whether they’re in preschool and are starting with a tee or are in high school, stealing bases and hitting home runs.
Football is Third
Boys are still big fans of football, although it’s seen a decline in popularity since 2012. Despite the drop, more than 1 million kids participate in organized leagues and thoroughly enjoy the sport when it’s taught responsibly and with safety in mind.
Soccer is Coming Up Fast
Although in fourth place now, it’s very likely that soccer will displace football in the coming years. Both girls and boys enjoy soccer in greater numbers each year, making it the fastest growing sport in the United States.
Girls Love Volleyball
Volleyball rounds out the top five for girls’ favorite sports and it’s no mystery why that might be. Fun, fast paced, and easy to learn, volleyball is a great sport for girls (or boys!) who want the experience of being on a team, like a quick-moving game, and want to get some great exercise in the process.
Track and Field
Although kids might compete independently for track and field, they still get to experience being on a team. Track and field accommodates lots of different abilities and skill sets, which makes it a great choice for a variety of kids.
At Borgman, we believe all kids deserve the chance to play sports. You can always count on our team to help yours get the equipment you need. Call us anytime with questions about installation and maintenance.
