Get Those Girls on the Field

Kids can learn a lot from organized sports: respect for others, what it means to work together as a team, how to relax and have fun, how to concentrate, how to win—and lose—graciously, and how to set and achieve goals. And really, there’s no difference in benefits for girls and boys when it comes to sports, but there is a good reason to put some special emphasis on encouraging girls to jump in and play.

One reason we should all encourage young girls to get out and play is that they can develop a better body image—one that combats the insane and unrealistic ideals the media swamp young girls with every day. Girls who play sports are more likely to report that they have a positive self-image and that they eat a healthy diet than girls who do not or have never played a team sport.

Another reason holds true for girls and boys: kids who play sports are less likely to engage in cigarette and elicit drug use. Young athletes are also far less likely to engage in sexual behavior than non-athletes.

Girls have traditionally been excluded or discouraged from pursuing careers in math and science, but playing organized sports seems to be one factor in changing that trend. Girls who play organized sports perform better in math and science, get higher grades in school, and are more likely to attend college.

Teenage girls are more at risk for low self-esteem than their male counterparts, but studies show that girls who play team sports are more likely to have higher self-esteem, most likely as a result of the confidence building aspects of sports.

At Borgman, we believe all kids deserve the chance to play sports. You can always count on our team to help yours get the equipment you need. Call us anytime with questions about installation and maintenance.
